llanigonChurch News from St Eigon's Church

Our annual Candlelit Carol Service, this year on Sunday 20th December, was as popular as ever and the church was packed. Pat and I festooned the pulpits, font, window niches and porch with as much holly and berries as we could gather and put candles and night lights wherever there was a space, even round the top of the pulpits -- it looked magical. As usual Julian and Anna donated the magnificent tree and John and Jan decorated it superbly -- the star shone brilliantly. It was a real team effort.

We all clutched our lit candles and St Mary’s choir made sure we all sang our hearts out. Father Richard played ‘A Rose Is Sprung’ by Brahms (the rose depicting the Mother of Christ), John played a South American carol on his guitar and the six lessons were read by Jan, Ruth, Julian, myself, Bronwen and Mark. Father Richard then proclaimed the Gospel and Hugo Carlisle helped take the collection.

Mulled wine and Paul’s mince pies warmed us all in more ways than one and the evening ended with the Grand Draw which, with the collection, raised a greatly needed £600 towards the annual quota and upkeep of our much loved church. Thank you to everyone who donated prizes. Julian had produced mountains of mistletoe so we all went home with armfuls on an ever hopeful note of Christmas cheer.

I would like especially to thank Bronwen and Rowan for being such stars in helping to put out candles, collect carol sheets and for tidying up at the end of the evening.

I was sad to miss the Christmas Day service at St Eigon's but was with my sister and her family in Llandeilo trying to sing ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ in Welsh.

Happy New Year.
Shan Egerton
