Flowers at St. Mary's
Jill Griffiths does a wonderful job arranging and tending the flowers at St. Mary's Church. She, her family and Sonia devote their time and much care to designing flower arrangements for our Festivals, the Flower Festival, Weddings, Mother's day posies, Funerals and many other occasions enhancing the beauty of our Church. Not to mention the regular watering and then clearing up. Wherever they can, they use foliage from gardens, but as we all know, flowers are expensive and having to provide containers and oasis is also a worry.
The PCC has agreed that it would be helpful to have a list in the church porch of people who would like to either buy and arrange, donate and put in water in the vestry or buy flowers from the Flower Shop in Hay for Jill to collect. She tends to the flowers on Fridays. Her telephone number is 01497 820664
The LIST will have the name of the donor, dedication or private intention and ideally would begin after the season of Lent when there are no flowers in the church.
PLEASE let anyone who you think might be interested know about this.
Thank you. Christina Watson
Thanks Again
I am most grateful to Diana Jones for providing me with this month's cartoon.
This, and a number of others still to come, were previously published in her late husband's church magazine. They are still funny and I am pleased to include one this month.
Perhaps you have similar cartoons that we can share and brighten up everyone's day!

Letter to the Editor
From Elizabeth (Jones) Keefe, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. Jan. 29th 2012
I am writing to tell you how much I enjoy your church magazine "Way - on - High". I was introduced to it through my sister Eileen Bufton whom I am certain that you know. As you can see from my address I now live in Canada but I enjoy reading the entries each month, especially, of course, the Bell Bank Report written by Eileen and accompanied by dear little Maddie of course.
The reason I am writing now is to commend Fr Richard on his monthly writings, especially the excerpt from the play "Heaven" which was included this time. I found it very inspiring, especially as I facilitate a bereavement support group here in my small fishing town on the northeast coast of Canada. I would be interested in finding out more about the actual play from which this was taken if you could assist me in this.
Again I commend you all on your publication and look forward to next months issue.
Also would you please forward my comments to Fr Richard. Thank you.
Giving up Marmalade.
As we are now in Lent it brings to mind a conversation following a PCC meeting at St. John's some years ago. This was when Canon Ivor Davies was Parish Priest (1970 – 1987). Members were discussing what they would be giving up for Lent.
Canon Davies informed us that his wife, Ilona, would be giving up marmalade because she loved it.
"I, also," he added, "will be giving up marmalade."
He paused,
"I hate it!"

THE BLACK MOUNTAINS LIONS CLUB, which is open to men and women of all ages, is seeking new members. You may be aware of our work through our monthly reports in the Wye Local. There is also plenty of information on our website www.blackmountainslions.co.uk
The Club, which covers the area of Hay-on-Wye and Talgarth, and all the surrounding villages, is part of a worldwide organisation – Lions Clubs International, which was founded in 1917, and now has over 1.3 million members, in more than 46,000 clubs in over 200 countries.
The Organisation is committed to solving worldwide health and social problems, and is particularly known for its SightFirst Campaign and Lions EyeHealth Programmes. Amongst other programmes, it also supports UNICEF Edukits, Medic Alert and Water Aid.
At a local level, Black Mountains Lions Club raises funds through various fundraising projects, and supports local charities and youth projects with donations. We also donate to disaster funds both at home and abroad. We collect and re-cycle spectacles for use in the third world, and promote the Lions Message in a Bottle Scheme, designed to encourage people to keep their personal medical details on a standard form in a common location – the fridge. Easily found if emergency services have to attend.
Our members do this whilst having fun themselves – we also hold a number of Club social activities. So if you think that you would like to get involved in something worthwhile – maybe you have had previous experience of belonging to a Service Organisation, Scouts, Guides or Young Farmers, and you know the fellowship that can be gained from being involved in charitable projects, why not come along to one of our meetings at the Baskerville Arms in Clyro to get some idea of what we do – no obligation. You and your ideas would be most welcome.
